Studies international institutions and global-level inequalities.
Murphy is the author of International Organization and Industrial Change: Global Governance since 1850 (Oxford, 1994), The UN Development Programme: A Better Way? (Cambridge, 2006), and, with JoAnne Yates, Engineering Rules: Global Standard Setting since 1880 (Johns Hopkins, 2019). He served as President of the International Studies Association (2000-2001) and received the Association’s Distinguished Scholar Awards in International Political Economy (2013) and International Organization (2024).
